Description:
Located on the Colville Reservation in a high steppe environment with Ponderosa Pine overstory, Albert Roberts & Carey Hunter run cattle, horses, and goats in rotational pastures. Their endeavor includes some 400 acres of leased hay ground, some irrigated alfalfa and some dryland meadow grass that serves as feed for a variety of needs. They are a newly licensed goat dairy and aged raw cheese facility and are focusing their herd of 45 goats towards milk production. In addition, they have sold meat goats for 18 years and continue to utilize that avenue to keep only the best breeding stock for the farm. Chicken production of eggs and fryers includes a chickenmobile and pasture-raised chickens. A large subsistence garden provides food for the family nearly year ‘round and has capitalized on recycling water through the use of gathering tanks and gravity flow systems. They also use a lot of mulching to prevent excess moisture evaporation in the long, dry, and hot summers. No farm is complete without a shop of some kind to address the ongoing machinery repair needs. Albert has hand built his 40 x 60 shop and is a veritable treasure trove of information about anything made of metal.
