Farm Walk 2012 Schedule

Monday, May 21 — Gibbs Organic Produce, Leavenworth, Organic Mechanics
12-12:30pm Registration; Farm Walk 12:30-4pm
Come to Gibbs Organic Produce farm in the beautiful Freund Canyon outside of Leavenworth prepared to turn some wrenches!  Pioneer farmer and mechanic Grant Gibbs and “Ask Albert” Roberts of Pine Stump Farm will work on two Massey-Ferguson tractors, one diesel and one gas powered.  Grant and Albert will review what’s included in a full service spring tune-up, including charging system, antifreeze, air cleaner and oil change. A disassembled motor will be on hand to show participants the inner working parts of a motor.  This is a down and dirty, outdoor workshop, so please dress accordingly and prepare to get your hands greasy! 

For those who want to stay after the farm walk, there will be a one-hour torch, stick and wire feed welding class, with a $15 suggested donation. A few helmets for the electric welding will be on hand, but please bring heavy sunglasses to protect your eyes when using cutting torches.  

Monday, June 4 — Hama Hama Oyster Company, Lilliwaup
Sustainable Shellfish Production

Family owned and operated, Hama Hama Oyster Farm is located midway up Hood Canal, one of the most prolific oyster-producing regions in the country. Lissa and Adam James farm oysters and clams on 100 acres of tide flats using old fashioned, natural catch methods alongside state-of-the-art shellfish aquaculture.  Unlike land-based farmers, they don’t have to feed, fertilize, weed or harrow, but their crops are underwater more than half the time and, in order to keep the oysters healthy, they need to keep the entire watershed healthy. Come explore life in the inter-tidal zone and learn about the possibilities and challenges inherent in modern-day shellfish farming. Please note that this Farm Walk will begin promptly at 11:30 for a favorable tide.

Friday, June 15 — Pride and Joy Dairy, Granger
Organic Raw Milk Dairy and Agri-tourism
12-12:30pm Registration; Farm Walk 12:30-4pm
Cheryl and Allen Voortman of Pride and Joy Dairy describe themselves as “grass farmers that also milk cows.” Their certified organic farm is modeled after New Zealand dairy operations that graze livestock exclusively on pasture. This provides their mix of Jersey, Holstein, Ayrshire, Swedish Red and Normandy breeds an agronomically-diverse, low stress life that keeps cows in production for twelve years, rather than the typical four. The Voortmans market healthy, tasty, raw organic milk and meat through an "honor system" farm store, online and through 16 outlets ranging from Spokane to Everett.   Aside from the dairy operations, visitors will hear about their diverse farm programs including agri-tourism farm stays, field days, working border collies and farm internships. 

Monday, June 25 — Sunfield Farm, Port Hadlock                   
Waldorf Education on a Biodynamic Farm

Sunfield Education Association is a pioneering nonprofit organization that runs a Waldorf school and community programs on a working biodynamic farm. The 81-acre Sunfield Farm produces vegetables and fruit for a 50-member CSA, farmers market and the wholesale market.  The farm has integrated rotational grazing for cows, sheep, goats and chickens.  The children of Sunfield School are actively engaged in the farm, learning how to respectfully care for the land as they work side by side with the farmers and interns.  Sunfield Farm also runs community education programs, inviting school groups and adults to learn about sustainable farming.  Come learn how farmers Neil and Verity Howee of Sunfield Farm engage the hands, awaken the mind, and nurture connections between the earth and its inhabitants.  This is a great opportunity to see  how Waldorf education and community activities are integrated into a working farm.

Monday, July 9 — Doubletree Farm, Twisp                 
Livestock Production with Horse Power

Doubletree Farm is a four-year-old, small-scale diversified family farm that relies on horse power for plowing, planting, cultivating and harvesting.  Farmers Sam Thrasher and Paul Soodak produce vegetables, beef and pork, as well as hay and grains for the family milk cow and their flock of laying hens.   Most of their farm products are sold directly to customers at the local farmers market and through a small winter CSA, with some product going to wholesale markets, local stores and bakeries.  Come see how Sam and Paul have developed an integrated, community-based farm utilizing horse power, livestock, manures, cover crops and crop rotations.

Monday, July 23 — Cloud Mountain Farm & Nursery, Everson
Developing a Broad Based Agricultural Enterprise and Improving Farmer Training

For thirty years, Cloud Mountain Farm & Nursery has been growing tree fruit, grapes and vegetables, plus propagating over 1,000 varieties of woody ornamental and fruit plants. Recently, owner Tom Thornton has added a farmer training center to host an array of fruit and gardening workshops and a pubic fruit festival.  Cloud Mountain Farm Center now offers training to new and beginning farmers to help improve their farming practices and increase farm profitability.  Join us for a tour of operations and a discussion of new cropping strategies, season extension techniques for tree fruit and vegetable production, and the importance of working with Washington State University to evaluate new varieties of fruits and vegetables.    

Monday, August 6 — Double Diamond Fruit Company, Quincy 
Improving the Sustainability of Large-Scale Fruit Production

Warren Morgan Orchards has been raising fruit in the Quincy area for over 30 years and currently grows about 300 acres of apples, cherries and apricots.  Warren established Double Diamond Fruit Company to store, pack, and sell fruit in 1986.  New technologies are continually being evaluated such as tower sprayers, compost tea, mow and blow, and platforms for workers.  The orchard uses intensive Integrated Pest Management in their orchards, with an independent pest consultant providing control recommendations based on traps, phenology models, and minimizing impacts on beneficial insects.  Initial tests of the “mow and blow” idea for managing the grassed orchard alleys to provide mulch for the tree row led to a joint project with WSU testing direct-seeding of legumes in the alley to grow more of the orchard nitrogen internally.  The Morgans have also been planting new apricot varieties that are exceptionally flavorful and are developing markets for this product.

Monday, September 10 — Kirsop Farm
Reduced Tillage and Organic Fertility Trials & Diversified Vegetable, Grain, and Poultry Production

Limit:  60 people; pre-registration is required for the Kirsop Farm Walk.
Kirsop Farm is a 20-acre diversified farm located in the city of Tumwater.  Now in its 17th year, Kirsop is co-owned and operated by Genine Bradwin and Colin Barricklow.  In addition to a 200-member CSA and two weekly farmers markets, they also provide fresh vegetables to local restaurants and stores.  Over the last five years Kirsop Farm has diversified production to include pastured poultry, grains, and mushrooms.  Colin and Genine are participating in two WSU on-farm research trials:  reduced tillage in organic agriculture, and managing fertility on organic farms.   The farm walk will highlight these research trials and the diversified vegetable, grain, and poultry production at Kirsop Farm.
